Universal PicturesWicked for Good is about to make a fortune in cinemas, but the stars of the movie have contradictory thoughts on whether there will be a third movie.
Wicked is based on the phenomenally successful stage musical of the same name, which in turn was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, which itself was inspired by the books of L. Frank Baum, and 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz.
Initially a single, standalone movie, Universal Pictures decided to split it in two, at the point where Act 1 moves into Act 2 onstage. The first film was a box office sensation in 2024, while sequel Wicked for Good hits screens this week, and early projections suggest it will open with a haul of anywhere between $195 million and $235 million worldwide.
Word-of-mouth is also likely to be strong, as we wrote in our Wicked for Good review that the film “is a triumph on multiple fronts; one that effortlessly combines music, dance, action, romance, and drama, while delivering major superhero thrills.” But that doesn’t mean that a threequel is inevitable…
What the stars are saying about Wicked 3
Universal PicturesDuring a Wicked for Good panel – footage from which Ariana Grande shared to Instagram – the idea of the stars being on a Wicked farewell tour was mentioned, which prompted an intriguing response from the Glinda actress.
“You mentioned farewell tour,” says Grande. “If we’ve learned anything from Cher we can count on there always being another farewell tour. So I don’t think anyone’s going anywhere.”
The host then asked if that was confirmation of Wicked 3, and Grande was non-committal in her answer, saying: “I don’t know. I mean, first of all, I know that there’s a great peace that’s coming along with this coming out and I think there’s a peace that’s felt, because people will finally get to know the full truth of these women.”

But Bowen Yang – who plays Pfannee in the two Wicked movies – poured water on the idea of a threequel like Dorothy throwing a bucked over the Wicked Witch of the West.
When asked by Variety about a potential Part 3 at the Wicked for Good LA premiere, Yang said “I think we leave it here,” before making a Hamlet joke by suggesting a spinoff for Pfannee and ShenShen: “I’m going to pitch a Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead story with my and Bronwyn James’ characters.”
Wicked for Good is in cinemas from Friday, November 21, when we’ll update this article with details of what happens at the end of the movie, and how that could feed into Wicked 3. For now, check out Dexerto’s list of the best movies of 2025 so far.
