The Witcher Season 4 release date, cast & everything we know

Liam Hemsworth as Geralt in The Witcher

Henry Cavill has officially made his exit as Geralt, but where will the series go from there? Here’s everything we know so far about The Witcher Season 4 on Netflix, including release date, cast, plot, and more.

Changes are afoot for The Witcher TV series: Henry Cavill’s leaving as Geralt, Liam Hemsworth is stepping into the role, and the end of Season 3 killed off numerous main characters. But the show must go on – there are monsters and monarchs to slay as the fight for Ciri’s Elder blood continues.

Netflix renewed The Witcher for Season 4 back in October 2022, before Season 3 had even aired. Now we know the show will officially end with Season 5.

Until then, the fourth chapter is on the horizon, so here’s everything we know about what to expect.

The Witcher Season 4 release date

The Witcher Season 4 will land on Netflix on October 30, 2025.

Unlike other big Netflix shows such as Stranger Things and Wednesday, the fourth chapter will release all eight episodes at once so you can watch them in one go.

Season 4 was filmed back-to-back with the fifth and final season, with production running from April to October 2024.

The Witcher Season 4 cast

One of the biggest and most significant talking points about The Witcher Season 4 cast is the fact that Liam Hemsworth will be replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia.

In addition to the recasting of Geralt, another Witcher from the School of the Wolf is set to have a new face for Season 4, with Kim Bodnia confirmed not to return as the great Vesemir.

Bodnia first appeared in Season 2 of the series as Vesemir, a beloved character from the book series who serves as a mentor to Gerlat and Ciri. While Bodnia will not be reprising his role due to scheduling conflicts, Peter Mullan is taking his place.

As for the returning cast and characters, you can find the list below:

Naturally, there will be even more actors and characters joining Geralt for this upcoming season, including Laurence Fishburne as Regis. Regis has appeared in both the books and the video game series and is known to be a very powerful higher vampire.

Furthermore, the following actors have also been cast in The Witcher Season 4 as new additions to the series:

Cavill announced his departure from the show in October 2022, leaving fans devastated. But while many have a lot to say about the recasting, there are some who are feeling hopeful about Hemsworth stepping into the role – including the cast members:

The Man of Steel star expressed his excitement about passing the torch to Hemsworth, taking to Instagram to write: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.

“In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.

“Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Hemsworth shared a similar sentiment on Instagram, writing: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.

“Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

The Witcher Season 4 plot

Liam Hemsworth as Geralt in The Witcher

As per Netflix, The Witcher Season 4 will follow on from Season 3’s continent-altering events, with Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri finding themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies.

“As their paths diverge and their goals sharpen, they encounter unexpected allies eager to join their journeys,” reads the description. “And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good…”

The fourth and fifth seasons will cover author Andrzej Sapkowski’s three remaining books: Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.

This time round, Hemsworth’s Geralt realizes political neutrality is no longer viable and he must pick a side. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Netflix, “His side is Ciri and Yen, and he will do anything [for them]. He will get involved in anything he has to get into in order to make that happen.”

Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer in The Witcher

Geralt will have Jaskier and Milva by his side, with Schmidt Hissrich adding, “This is the beginning of what fans [of the books] will know as the Hanza. It’s the group traveling with Geralt for the rest of the books. This becomes his newfound family.

“He begins to realize that he needs help to get Yennefer and Ciri back, and when you need to help, you actually have to give of yourself as well. So, we start to watch the Hanza build and start to see that there are some amazing emotional connections to come there as well.”

As for Ciri, we’ll be seeing a “completely different side” to her in Season 4 after joining The Rats – a gang of teenage bandits and outlaws who are known for stealing from the rich for their own material gain.

There’s also the question of whether Ciri’s powers are gone for good. “Did we want her to choose to give up her powers – meaning that she has them, but she’s not going to access them because she wants to rid herself of her prior identity? Or did she actually magically relinquish those powers and she no longer has access to them?” added the showrunner.

Freya Allan as Ciri in The Witcher Season 3

“You’ll have to watch Season 4 to wait and see which is true. She can either continue living in the past or she can, at the end of her desert experience, push into the future. And she makes the choice for her future. I think in Season 4, that’s a decision she’s going to keep coming back to: ‘How do you forget where you came from? And do you actually want to?’”

For Yennefer, she’ll be dealing with “difficult questions” as the leader of Aretuza. Schmidt Hissrich conrinued, “Now the Brotherhood and her mother figure – her leader – are gone, how does she want to start to lead? And what does she want to be within the magical society of this world? She has some big choices to make.”
