NetflixStranger Things Season 5 is set to showcase the Netflix show’s “most violent death” yet, and fans think they already know who’ll be meeting their bloody demise in the final episodes.
Volume 1 landed on Netflix on November 26, taking place over a year after the events of Season 4, when Hawkins is under quarantine, the military are after Eleven, and Vecna is nowhere to be seen.
Thankfully, no one major died in the first chapter, but with Volume 2 and the finale still to go, there’s all the chance some of our fan favorite characters will snuff it in the upcoming episodes.
In a previous conversation with The Times, the Duffer brothers teased, “I would say Season 5 is not as violent as Season 4, but it has the most violent death of any season.” But if you’re worried it might be Steve or El, fans have another theory.
Stranger Things Season 5 “most violent death” theory
NetflixTaking to Reddit to share the “violent death” tease, many fans have pointed out that this doesn’t necessarily mean a beloved character will die – and they think it could be either Dr. Kay or Vecna.
“Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a death from the main cast though,” wrote one, to which another replied, “Probably one of the villains, like Dr. Kay.”
“Or number 1,” added a third, with a fourth agreeing, “Yeah, probably Vecna’s.”
There are plenty of similar comments, with fans convinced that the Duffer brothers wouldn’t do that to the Stranger Things fans. “They aren’t killing a main character in a violent way,” said one.

Another wrote, “Yeah, they’re not killing a main character like that. They love a heartfelt goodbye scene when a beloved character passes (well unless you’re Bob lol) especially if it’s gonna be a main, can’t have the dying person give a final farewell if they’re ripped to shreds or beheaded etc.”
Others are just curious how it’s possible to top Vecna’s bone-crunching slays from Season 4, with one asking, “How do you get more violent than arms, legs, face all being broken and contorted followed by your eyes being sucked into your skull?”
“Even the people melting into a giant flesh monster in Season 3. They just fell to the ground and plop into a pool of blood and guts,” added another. “Vecna’s kills definitely seemed to hurt more, but god those melting people scenes were so nasty lol.”
Cinemablend’s Laura Hurley believes we’ve already seen the gruesome death in Season 5 Volume 1, when Vecna pokes his claws through the eyes of an injured soldier.
But this arguably doesn’t feel significant – or gruesome – enough to qualify as the death the Duffers teased. It’s far more likely that the real shocker is being held back for Volume 2 or the series finale, where the biggest consequences are expected to land.
As one fan pointed out, “Well.. guess we’re gonna find out.”
Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 drops on Netflix on Christmas Day, followed by the finale on New Year’s Eve.
