Stranger Things Season 5 crashes Netflix on launch

Netflix crashed as fans flock to watch Stranger Things Season 5 the minute it launched.

Considering the hype around the show, it’s unsurprising that everyone was desperate to see it the moment it goes live, especially since there are plenty of theories over which characters will die and how (or if!) the Hawkins gang will manage to stop Vecna from merging the world with the Upside Down.

It isn’t the first time a highly anticipated Netflix release has crashed the platform, in November 2024 the streamer faced issues as viewers attempted to watch the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, but to no avail.

But considering Stranger Things Season 5 is one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons of the 21st century, so it’s fair to say that fans were pretty disappointed by the outage.

Netflix resumed service shortly after the Stranger Things launch

Netflix appeared to be back up and running for most people by around 8.20 pm EST/1.20 am GMT. Fans online were met with a service message that read: “Something went wrong. Sorry, we’re having trouble with your request. You’ll find lots to explore on the home page.”

Many fans were very frustrated by the delayed start, as one person wrote “Stranger Things s5 just released and netflix is already down lmfao,” while another added “And servers are f*cked!!!”

A UK viewer added “Me staying up until 1am and then Netflix going down instantly.”

Another Stranger Things fan said: “WHY IS NETFLIX DOWN I NEED TO WATCH.”

Luckily Netflix reestablished its connection to the Upside Down and now that you can watch uninterrupted, check out our guide to the best Stranger Things characters, take a look at the horror TV shows you should be watching, and discover which episodes of Stranger Things the Duffer brothers want you to watch before the final season.
