Stranger Things Season 5 launched with four spellbinding instalments that heralded the beginning of the end, but eagle-eyed fans have noticed a continuity error that directly contradicts a detail from Season 2.

There was lots to unpack in Stranger Things 5, from Will becoming super-powered and a forgotten character returning, to a hidden detail that could reveal the truth about Vecna.

Here’s how the Episode 4 ending sets up Volumes 2 and 3, while we’ve also got details of how to get cinema tickets for the finale.

But while fans are waiting for that climax, they’ve noticed something in Season 5 Volume 1 that just doesn’t add up…

How Stranger Things contradicts itself

Will building Castle Byers.

During ‘The Mind Flayer’ episode of Stranger Things Season 2, Jonathan Byers describes the day that he and brother Will built their beloved fort.

“We stayed up all night building Castle Byers,” says Jonathan. “Just the way you drew it. And it took so long because you were so bad at hammering. You’d miss the nail every time. And then it started raining, but we stayed out there anyway. We were both sick for like a week after that. But we just had to finish it, didn’t we? We just had to.”

Fast forward to Season 5 episode ‘Sorcerer,’ and when Will is flashing back to key moments in his life, we the the Castle Byers build, and it takes place on a clear and gloriously sunny summer’s day. Prompting some viewers to call foul.

One fan writes: “Jonathan once said that when he and Will built Castle Byers, it was pouring rain and they both got so soaked they ended up sick for a whole week,” and in reference to another mistake, another responds: “They gave up on continuity a long time ago, they literally forgot Will’s birthday last season, fans had to remind them.”

But others have tried to explain the mistake, with one viewer saying: “Well he actually said that it started to rain so perhaps they didn’t show it?” And another suggesting “in that memory shown, the castle doesn’t appear to be finished, and Jonathan said they spent the ENTIRE day building it. It’s likely that it wasn’t raining at the time shown and it rained later.”

Stranger Things creators the Duffer brothers previously weighed in on Will’s birthday mistake, but they haven’t yet acknowledged this potential mistake.
