Macaulay Culkin plots Home Alone return and reveals his sequel story idea

Macaulay Culkin is officially cracking the door open for a return as Kevin McCallister – and he already has a pitch for a brand-new Home Alone sequel that flips the original premise on its head.

The Home Alone franchise has never recaptured the magic of Culkin’s first two films. After Lost in New York, the series veered off course with Home Alone 3, which replaced Kevin entirely and introduced a spy plot involving nuclear launch codes hidden in a toy car. Later attempts to revive Kevin with new actors were met with lukewarm or outright negative reception.

Now, Culkin says he’d be open to coming back, as long as the script is “just right.”

As reported by Variety, while speaking during a stop on his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour, the actor said he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to returning as Kevin in a new sequel. And he revealed the pitch he’s already cooked up.

“I kind of had this idea,” Culkin said. “I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid… I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention, and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me. And then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”

Instead of Kevin defending his home from bandits, Culkin imagines a generational twist where he becomes the one forced to outsmart the traps. The house, he says, serves as a metaphor for the strained father-son relationship.

“My character has to get let back into his son’s heart,” he explained. “That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”

Amazingly, Culkin’s real-life kids had no idea he was actually in Home Alone when they first watched it. It wasn’t until they saw old photos that they connected the dots and realized their dad was the kid defending the house from the Wet Bandits.

Whether Culkin’s pitch actually becomes another Home Alone movie remains to be seen, but fans are already fired up about the possibility of a proper sequel, and a long-awaited return of the franchise’s original star.
