Guerrilla GamesSony plans to start filming its Horizon Zero Dawn movie in 2026, but there’s one major issue they need to sort out before the cameras start rolling.
Horizon Zero Dawn will be Sony’s next attempt at striking gold on the big screen following Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and Until Dawn. Of course, PlayStation Productions has also found huge success with The Last of Us TV series.
The studio is working on adapting a number of other games including a Resident Evil movie from Zach Cregger, The Ghost of Tsushima, and Helldivers.
For now it looks like Horizon Zero Dawn will be moving forward first, but Sony just needs to make a vital decision before the project gets off the ground.
Sony’s Horizon Zero Dawn movie still needs a director
Guerrilla Games / PlayStationAccording to a legal document seen by The Game Post, Sony is planning to film Horizon Zero Dawn in 2026 and even has a working script ready to go as it eyes up a 2027 release date, but the movie needs a director before it can move forward.
Once that person is in place then presumably conversations can start about the cast and the wider vision for Aloy’s adventure. Players might remember that Sony was originally working on an eight-episode TV series with Netflix.
However, the studio decided not to move forward with it after allegations of bullying and toxic behavior were made against showrunner Steve Blackman while he was working on The Umbrella Academy.
SonyWhile that was disappointing at the time, it might work out in Horizon Zero Dawn’s favor because the sheer scale of the post-apocalyptic story is suited to the big screen.

Casting decisions aside, choosing the right director could make or break the project. Sony needs to pick someone who can make a grand sci-fi setting feel tangible and exciting – perhaps they need to give Neill Blomkamp or Gareth Edwards a call.
