God of War Amazon

God of War is officially being made into a TV series and will be developed by Amazon. Continue reading for all the latest details about the show, including casting, crew, and setting details.

The God of War franchise is one that, while first made popular back on the PlayStation 2, has reached new levels of fame thanks to the major success of the rebooted series, God of War and God of War: Ragnarok.

The former of the two winning Game of the Year back in 2018, with Ragnarok losing out to Elden Ring at the 2022 Game Awards. Now, following the success of the games comes a new TV adaptation, with Amazon confirmed to be the streaming service bringing Kratos to the silver screen.

While the show is still in early development stages, we’ve gathered up all the information we can find about the upcoming adaptation of God of War.

Is there a release date for the God of War TV show?

Although the series was greenlit back in 2022, God of War remains in early development. As such, there’s no release date yet, or even a rough release window to work with.

What we do know for certain is that a director is now attached, more on that below, and that casting is now underway. So progress is indeed being made, but it’s clear we’re still quite a ways off.

Thus, don’t expect to see the God of War TV show before 2027 at the absolute earliest.

Cast and crew details

No, Kratos has not been cast just yet; however, the process is now underway to find a hulking father capable of yelling ‘Boy!’ at just the right cadence.

Naturally, Christopher Judge – the man behind the voice and motion capture of Kratos – has expressed interest in the role.

While actors are yet to be confirmed, the crew penning the show has shuffled around. Originally, Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men) were brought on as screenwriters. Two years after the project’s announcement, however, and they departed, with Amazon going in a different creative direction, as Deadline reported.

Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) was also serving as showrunner, but has since hopped off the show as well.

Ronald D. Moore, best known for his work in the Star Trek franchise, has officially joined the God of War TV series and will serve as the showrunner, writer, and executive producer on the show.

Furthermore, Emmy-winning Director, Frederick E.O. Toye of Shogun fame, is locked in to direct at least the first two episodes of the live-action show, as Deadline first reported.

Plot and setting details

While the original God of War series was set in Greek Mythology, the recent games placed Kratos in Norse mythology, where he battled the likes of Thor and Odin.

Based on initial reports for the show, the TV series will follow the plot of the newer games. In a report from Deadline, the outlet provided a synopsis of the upcoming show, which reads as follows:

“The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak—his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

Amazon backing God of War for the long run

Before we even so much as see a frame of the first season, Amazon has already backed the show for Season 2.

Showrunner Ronald Moore teased as much on The Sackhoff Show in March, 2025. “Right now, I’m working on an adaptation of a video game called God of War. It’s a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of. They’ve asked me to come in, and I’m literally in the writers’ room working on that.”

Straight from the horse’s mouth, we can expect at least two full seasons of the show, regardless of how it initially performs. This could indicate a story is shaping up to span multiple seasons already, possibly being filmed concurrently.
