A Far Cry TV series is officially moving forward, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob Mac is set to appear, at least in the first outing of the anthology – more on that below.

Far Cry is making its way to the silver screen. After 21 years, six mainline games, and a handful of spinoffs, a live-action TV show is now moving forward for the first time.

The action-packed open world series has become a tentpole franchise for Ubisoft, having sold north of 50 million units through its lifetime. While some entries have fared better than others, they all deliver that trademark chaos only a Far Cry game can.

Beyond an animated show and a forgotten 2008 direct-to-video film starring Til Schweiger, Far Cry has remained a video game through and through. Now, it’s set to branch out, and comedy star Rob Mac is helping lead the charge.

Do we know when the Far Cry TV series will be out?

No, there’s currently no indication of when the Far Cary series may premiere. As it’s early days, with ink only just drying on a deal between FX and Ubisoft, it’ll most likely still be a few years before we can actually watch the first season.

Clearly, an idea is in place, but there’s plenty of work to be done before production even gets underway. Casting, location scouting, and all the rest will certainly take a good while, and that’s before filming kicks off.

As such, we don’t expect to see the Far Cry series until 2027 at the absolute earliest.

Who’s involved with the Far Cry TV show? Cast and crew details

Thus far, only one cast member has been confirmed for the show, and he just so happens to be serving as co-creator as well.

Rob Mac (formerly Rob McElhenny) of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham fame, is not only confirmed to be appearing in front of the camera, but he’s involved as co-creator behind the camera too.

Mac has long showcased his passion for video games, even helming Apple TV’s Mythic Quest, a show about a video game studio.

It’s yet unclear if he’ll be the protagonist of Season 1 or another recurring character. It’s unclear if he’ll be on screen across future seasons – more on that below.

Rob Mac will be front and center in the new Far Cry series.

Joining Mac is Noah Hawley, accomplished writer most recently coming off the back of Alien: Earth’s critical acclaim. After multiple years writing Fargo, and now working in the Alien universe, he’s juggling a number of plates as he adds the Far Cry show to his agenda as well.

Beyond that, there’s no quite telling who else may get involved. We know there needs to be an iconic antagonist for it to truly feel like Far Cry, not to mention some zany companions. We’ll be sure to update you here as any cast details emerge.

What will the Far Cry series be about?

As mentioned, it’s been confirmed the Far Cry TV series will be treated as an anthology. So rather than one continuous story played out over multiple seasons, each new batch of episodes comes as a fresh start.

That means an entirely new cast of characters with each season, and even a new setting as well. From fictional takes on Cuba to African saharas, the series has been all over, and clearly, the show is striving to replicate that.

“What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is it’s an anthology,” Hawley said. “Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme.

“To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”

The definition of insanity would be not having Michael Mando return as Vaas in some capacity.

It’s unclear whether any particular seasons may focus on stories already told in the games, or whether they will stand as completely separate tales. We’ll just have to wait and see what the creators have in store.

Where is it streaming?

FX ordered Season 1 on November 24, 2025. Therefore, you can expect to see the Far Cry show on Hulu in the United States when it’s ready. FX is available through Disney+ in most other regions.
