Dexter Resurrection showrunner confirms Season 2 “great big bad” and story details

Dexter Morgan in Resurrection

Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips has confirmed that the second season of Dexter Resurrection will involve the New York Ripper, or at least the individual thought to be the infamous killer.

All season long in Dexter Resurrection, one unseen figure kept dominating fan theories: the New York Ripper. (Spoilers ahead.)

The Ripper never shows up on screen, but the series confirms he murdered victims using a long rod fitted with a hooked blade, a weapon later seen among Leon Prater’s trophies. Although the killings stopped years ago, the Ripper still torments survivors with chilling phone calls. The case also remains a fixation for Detective Claudette Wallace, who originally investigated the murders.

In the finale, after Dexter kills Prater and steals files tied to other criminals, he plants a New York Ripper dossier for the NYPD. Inside is the name “Don Framt” – though whether it’s real or just another alias is left open. Well, showrunner Clyde Phillips has confirmed that Season 2 will address this, and we’ll finally find out more about this mysterious figure.

Is Don Framt really the name of the New York Ripper?

During an appearance on the November 18 episode of Dark Passengers: A Dexter Podcast, Clyde Phillips was asked about Don Frampt and what the future will hold.

“The internet went crazy over Don Frampt,” he said, referencing numerous fan theories about the character, such as him being Dexter’s stepson Cody or even the Trinity Killer’s son Jonah Mitchell.

“It kinda prompted us to think more about it. And… he’ll be in the second season.”

This doesn’t mean that Don Frampt actually is the New York Ripper or to what extent he will be in it, but it does confirm that the storyline will continue from the end of Season 1.

Additionally, a couple of months earlier on the Dissecting Dexter podcast, Phillips revealed the structure of season 2, stating, “we’ve got a great big bad for next season and some other what we call little bads, you know, the weekly bads.”

(segment begins at 59:00)

These “little bads” will likely be the other killers Dexter has files on, but it’s unclear if the “great big bad” will be the Ripper or if they’re saving him for the series finale and this antagonist will be someone else entirely.

Rumors and fan castings have suggested that Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston could end up playing The New York Ripper, but so far, nothing has been announced.

Unfortunately, we’ll still have quite a bit to wait. While Season 2 is set to begin shooting in the summer, don’t expect Dexter: Resurrection to air until the tail-end of 2026.
