Roblox CSO responds to investigation launched by South Carolina AG: “Our commitment to safety never ends”

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has announced a new investigation into Roblox Corporation, adding to growing legal scrutiny over the platform’s child safety practices.
On December 16, Wilson confirmed that his office issued a Civil Investigative Demand to Roblox under the South Carolina Unfair Trade Practices Act. The demand seeks information on how Roblox moderates content, markets to minors, and represents safety protections to parents.
The investigation follows a wave of recent legal action against Roblox, including a lawsuit filed by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into the platform’s handling of child safety.

Following the announcement, Roblox provided Dexerto with a statement emphasizing its safety measures and cooperation with law enforcement.
“We share Attorney General Wilson’s commitment to helping keep children safe online,” said Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer. “As a space specifically designed with children in mind, Roblox has advanced safeguards that monitor the platform for harmful content and communications.”
Kaufman said Roblox does not allow image sharing through chat, which he described as one of the most common avenues for misuse on other platforms.

He added that the company is rolling out additional measures to further limit who users can communicate with and takes action against accounts that violate its safety rules.
“Safety is a constant and consistent focus of our work,” Kaufman said. “We take swift action against anyone found to violate our safety rules and work closely with law enforcement to support investigations and help hold bad actors accountable.”
Roblox also shared additional background on its safety systems, stating that its policies are intentionally stricter than those on many other user-generated content platforms. The company said all communication on Roblox is monitored for serious harms and that filters are used to block the sharing of personal information.

Addressing age verification, Roblox said it views the issue as an industry-wide challenge but has taken what it described as an industry-leading approach to age-based communication.
The company recently announced plans to roll out age estimation technology globally by the end of the year before any user is allowed to communicate on the platform.
Roblox said it works closely with law enforcement, government agencies, and child safety organizations, including maintaining direct communication channels with the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for immediate escalation of serious threats.
“While no system can be perfect, our commitment to safety never ends,” Kaufman said. “As a dad, I know there is no finish line when it comes to protecting kids, which is why we continue to evolve and strengthen our protections every day.”
Kaufman directs parents interested in learning more about Roblox’s safety work to check out the Roblox Safety Center.
South Carolina probes Roblox’s safety claims
In a press release, Wilson said the investigation will examine whether Roblox engaged in unfair or deceptive practices by promoting itself as a safe environment for children while allegedly allowing sexualized content and inadequate protections.
“Roblox markets itself as the #1 gaming platform for kids and teens,” Wilson said. “But ensuring the safety of our children online is a top priority for me, and if Roblox is deceiving parents on their safety protocols, they deserve to be held accountable.”
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the Civil Investigative Demand requests information on several areas, including how many South Carolina minors use Roblox, how user-generated content is moderated, whether advertisers are allowed to target users, and what age-verification or parental consent measures are in place.
The demand also seeks records related to potential violations of the South Carolina Uniform Money Services Act.
In a statement shared on X, Wilson emphasized parental trust and child protection as the driving force behind the investigation.
“Our kids’ online safety is non-negotiable,” he said, adding that platforms marketing themselves to children have a responsibility to protect them rather than expose them to sexualized content or deceptive practices.
Roblox has not publicly responded to the Civil Investigative Demand as of publication.
