Florida AG sues Roblox over child safety as criminal investigation continues

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced that his office has officially filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the platform of misrepresenting its safety measures while failing to protect children from predators.

The lawsuit was revealed on December 11 while Uthmeier’s criminal investigation into Roblox remains ongoing, marking a significant escalation in Florida’s legal action against the gaming platform.

Roblox has been under scrutiny from Uthmeier’s office since earlier this year, when Florida issued both civil and criminal subpoenas seeking internal documents related to moderation, safety systems, and reports of predatory behavior on the platform.

Roblox is one of the most popular online games for children, with millions of users under 13.

In recent months, Uthmeier has repeatedly accused Roblox of prioritizing growth and revenue over child safety, claims Roblox has denied while pointing to new moderation tools and safety updates introduced in 2025.

Florida AG says Roblox misrepresented platform safety

In a video posted to X, Uthmeier said the lawsuit followed a review of materials produced by Roblox in response to the state’s criminal subpoena.

“We reviewed the information demanded in our subpoena and what we found is unacceptable,” Uthmeier said. “Roblox aggressively markets to young children but fails to protect them from sexual predators.”

While emphasizing that the criminal investigation is still active, Uthmeier said the lawsuit is intended to hold Roblox accountable using additional legal tools.

“While the criminal investigation continues, we’re using all tools in the toolbox to hold this dangerous platform accountable,” he said. “That’s why today I’m announcing that my office is filing a lawsuit against Roblox for what we believe are serious failures to protect our kids.”

Uthmeier also framed the lawsuit as a matter of parental trust. “Roblox broke the trust of parents and my office will make sure they answer for it,” he said.

Lawsuit references alleged retaliation against Schlep

In a separate post on X, Roblox safety advocate Michael “Schlep” Schlep said the lawsuit references him by name, citing allegations that Roblox attempted to silence him after he publicly highlighted predatory behavior on the platform.

According to excerpts from the lawsuit shared online, Schlep was targeted by another Roblox developer as a minor and later worked to identify predators on the platform, efforts that led to multiple arrests across the United States.

The lawsuit claims Roblox continued to work with the alleged predator for years and later banned Schlep while issuing a cease-and-desist notice against him.

The lawsuit further alleges that Roblox lacked basic safety features necessary to protect children and that the company continued recruiting young users while offering what the state describes as false assurances of safety.

Roblox has previously said it has zero tolerance for illegal activity and has pointed to new age-estimation tools, chat restrictions, and moderation systems as evidence of its commitment to child safety. The company has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit announced on December 11.
