Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Henry Cavill and Jack Black all want a Red Dead Redemption movie

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is riding a new wave of fan hype after an old convention clip resurfaced showing The Walking Dead star campaigning to play Arthur Morgan in a Red Dead Redemption movie. But he’s far from the only Hollywood name calling for Rockstar’s Western epic to hit the big screen.

The video comes from a fan Q&A last year, where Morgan didn’t hesitate when asked if he’d ever play the Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist.

“That’s the one that I want to do,” he said. “My favorite genre is Westerns, and there’s not even a close second. My son plays that game, and it’s freaking awesome. In a heartbeat, I would do it for free.”

He’s not the only one who wants to play Arthur, either.

Arthur Morgan himself wants in, too

Of course, the man behind Arthur Morgan already has thoughts of his own. Roger Clark previously said he’d “absolutely” revisit the role in a movie or TV series, but admitted the situation has gotten complicated.

He pointed to the surge in game adaptations and the tendency for Hollywood to overlook the original voice and performance capture casts.

“What I don’t think is awesome is how the original cast never even gets acknowledged or looked at, even,” he said.

Henry Cavill and Jack Black have pitched Red Dead as well

While not necessarily gunning for Arthur himself, both Henry Cavill and Jack Black have publicly pushed for a Red Dead adaptation.

Cavill said he started playing RDR2 and was “really enjoying it,” adding that it would be a great fit for a movie or series.

Jack Black echoed the sentiment, saying Rockstar’s titles are basically movies already.

“I can’t believe they haven’t already started making a movie of any of the Rockstar Games… but especially Red Dead Redemption,” he said.

Why a Red Dead or GTA movie still seems unlikely

Despite major star interest, a Red Dead or GTA movie isn’t expected anytime soon. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the studio is “very, very selective” about letting outside creators adapt its IP, pointing to the mixed reaction to the Borderlands movie as a cautionary tale.

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser also revealed Hollywood had already approached the studio about adapting GTA or Red Dead. The pitches were ultimately rejected because Rockstar wouldn’t retain full creative control.

So while Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Henry Cavill, Jack Black and even Arthur Morgan’s original actor are all ready to saddle up, the decision rests with Rockstar, and right now, the studio isn’t riding into Hollywood anytime soon.
