The Great League is the ideal place to start in Pokemon Go‘s competitive mode, since it’s the most basic and accessible tier of them all. So, check out which Pokemon are perfect to build a winning team!

Each new Pokemon Go season shakes up the meta in the Go Battle League, forcing players to rebuild their teams and devise new strategies to climb the ranks for a spot at the top.

However, unlike the Ultra and Master Leagues, this one gives all trainers a fairer chance at glory, as only Pokemon under 1500 CP can compete. This means that while powerful creatures can participate, you won’t have Legendaries one-shotting you.

Best team for Pokemon Go Great League

DEXERTO

Currently, the best team that trainers can use in the Great League includes Galarian Corsola, Cradily, and Shadow Marowak, as these are three of the strongest fighters, and they all offer good coverage against most of the major Great League opponents.

Galarian Corsola shines in the Battle League due to its bulkiness and strong moveset, which benefits from STAB.

Tackle is a really bad option, so pick Astonish for your Fast Move, as it is the only Ghost-type attack and has great synergy with Night Shade (very cheap with decent damage per energy). You can add Power Gem to the moveset, as it will expand your coverage, thanks to its affordability.

Cradily, who has never really had any viability in the Pokemon Go Battle League before, is currently ranking at the top of PvPoke. This is most likely thanks to a very strong moveset and bulkiness.

While Bullet Seed and Infestation have fast energy generation, Acid is pretty decent and can help Cradily, mainly against Grass and Fairy-type opponents. As for the Charged Moves, both Grass Knot and Rock Tomb expand the coverage, while the latter also decreases the target’s Attack stat by 20%.

Thanks to its high Defense, Shadow Marowak can sacrifice some of it for a higher Attack stat. Mud-Slap is the best of the two Fast Moves available, as it deals more damage than the other option – Rock Smash – and benefits from STAB.

As a spammy Pokemon, Marowak can access its Charged Moves fast, so use Bone Club to bait shields and get STAB, or Rock Slide for more power, as well as extra coverage.

Alternatives

If you don’t have access to either of those three Pokemon you can switch them:

• Galarian Corsola: switch it for Shadow Dusknoir or Dusclops.
• Cradily: switch it for Lileep or Amoonguss.
• Shadow Marowak: switch it for Shadow Golurk or Gastrodon.

Best Pokemon for Pokemon Go Great League

Forretress

DEXERTO

• Fast Move: Volt Switch
• Charged Moves: Rock Tomb and Earthquake
• Type: Bug/Steel
• Resistances: Poison, Grass, Steel, Psychic, Normal, Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Fire

Forretress is a solid choice for any team as it boasts numerous useful resistances, and it’s only weak to one type (Fire), which is not being played a lot during this season. Plus, it has a great Defense stat.

Bug-type moves are not good at all in Pokemon Go, so use Volt Switch as the Fast Move to expand the coverage and deal decent damage.

For the Charged Move, use Rock Tomb to decrease your opponent’s Attack stat and bait their shields. Then you can finish them up with Earthquake, a solid Ground-type nuke that saves you from your only weakness.

Spiritomb

• Fast Move: Sucker Punch
• Charged Moves: Rock Tomb and Shadow Ball
• Type: Ghost/Dark
• Resistances: Normal, Psychic, Poison, and Fighting
• Weaknesses: Fairy

For those who don’t have a Sableye (or at least not a strong one), Spiritomb is a great alternative, featuring the same type combination, as well as similar stats and coverage.

As for the moveset, players should go for Sucker Punch as the Fast Move, as it outclasses the other option (Feint Attack) by far. For the Charged Moves, Shadow Ball is Spiritomb’s main threat, while Rock Tomb can be used to expand the coverage and decrease the target’s Attack stat by 20%.

Sableye (Shadow XL)

• Charged Moves: Foul Play and Power Gem
• Type: Dark/Ghost
• Resistances: Psychic, Normal, Poison, and Fighting
• Weaknesses: Fairy

The tiny Sableye can be deceitful, as it looks kind of weak and not threatening at all. However, its good type combination leaves it with only one weakness. Plus, it has a pretty solid move pool trainers can play with.

Even though both Fast Moves benefit from STAB and deal the same damage, Shadow Claw is much better due to its coverage and higher energy generation.

For the Charged Move, Foul Play is the best way to go as it benefits from STAB, is cheap, has great coverage, and is spammy. This way, players can take down the opponent’s shields to then hit them full-on or switch to the coverage move, Power Gem.

Lickilicky

• Charged Moves: Body Slam and Shadow Ball
• Type: Normal
• Resistances: Ghost
• Weaknesses: Fighting

The bulky Lickilicky is a very solid choice for the League, as it only has one weakness, and its move pool allows it to hit a wide range of types with Normal, Shadow, and Rock attacks.

Rollout is a move that offers fast charge, so Lickilicky can access both Charged Moves faster. Body Slam can be used as shield bait, while Shadow Ball works as a coverage nuke to target league favorites Giratina and Cresselia.

Dusknoir (Shadow)

• Charged Moves: Shadow Punch and Dynamic Punch
• Type: Ghost
• Resistances: Normal, Fighting, Poison, and Bug
• Weaknesses: Dark and Ghost

This Pokemon works best as the lead or charger of a team. Plus, it has the necessary Defense to stand its ground while dealing good damage.

Astonish is a very spammy move that will allow it to access its Charged Moves fast while also getting rid of the opponent’s shields. The key to Dusknoir making it into the League is mainly because of Shadow Punch, an excellent Ghost-type move, and Dynamic Punch, a Fighting-type attack that expands its coverage.

Aegislash (Shield XL)

• Charged Moves: Shadow Ball and Gyro Ball
• Type: Steel/Ghost
• Resistances: Normal, Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Psychic, Rock, Steel, and Fighting
• Weaknesses: Dark, Fire, Ghost, and Ground

Even though it has an odd behaviour during battle, switching between its Shield and Blade forms, Aegislash is an outstanding choice for the Battle League due to its moveset and resistances.

Psycho Cut has good energy generation, which is key for using this particular Pokemon, as it will remain in its Shield form until its time to use a Charged Move. As for those, Shadow Ball deals serious damage for a very low cost, so take advantage of that. Plus, it benefits from STAB. Then, use Gyro Ball for more coverage and STAB.

Stunfisk

• Fast Move: Thunder Shock
• Charged Moves: Mud Bomb and Discharge
• Type: Ground/Electric
• Resistances: Electric, Steel, Rock, Poison, and Flying
• Weaknesses: Grass, Ground, Ice, and Water

Stunfisk is a very bulky Pokemon thanks to its decent Defense and high Stamina stats. Plus, its unique type combination allows it to stand strong against league favorites such as Rock, Steel, and Flying opponents.

Thunder Shock is a fast charge move that will grant you access to your Charged Moves sooner. With Mud Bomb, you can bait the enemy shields so you’re free to hit them full-on with Discharge afterward. Both have almost the same stats, so you can switch between them depending on your opponent’s typing.

Corviknight

• Fast Move: Sand Attack
• Charged Moves: Air Cutter and Payback
• Type: Flying/Steel
• Resistances: Bug, Grass, Poison, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Psychic, Steel, and Ground

Like most Steel-type Pokemon, one of Corviknight’s advantages is the many resistances it has. That, along with its very good Defense and Stamina stats, makes this a very difficult creature to take down.

Even though it’s the only Fast Move that doesn’t benefit from STAB, Sand Attack offers great coverage and has a very fast energy gain.

As for the Charged Moves, Air Cutter is quite spammy, so it can help you take down the opponent’s shields. Plus, it benefits from STAB and has a 30% chance of boosting your Attack stat by 25%. Payback, on the other hand, is a coverage nuke all trainers using Corviknight should have as a secondary choice.

Sealeo (Shadow)

• Charged Moves: Surf and Body Slam
• Type: Ice/Water
• Resistances: Ice and Water
• Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, Grass, and Rock

Sealeo is a solid choice in the tournament because of its bulk and spammy moves that let it outlast opponents and apply constant pressure in limited metas.

For the Fast Move, players can use Powder Snow to build energy quickly while applying steady pressure (with STAB). Fire off the Charged Move Body Slam whenever possible to force your opponent’s shields or secure momentum, and rely on Surf for stronger, more threatening coverage when you need to push through bulkier targets.

Bastiodon (XL)

• Charged Moves: Stone Edge and Flamethrower
• Type: Rock/Steel
• Resistances: Dragon, Ice, Psychic, Fairy, Bug, Rock, Flying, Normal, and Poison

Even when compared to Legendaries and other powerful Pokemon, Bastiodon still has one of the best Defense stats in Pokemon Go. Its Attack stat pales in comparison, but that doesn’t stop it from excelling in the Great League Edition.

Smack Down as a Fast Move hits hard, while Stone Edge is a powerful Rock-type Charged Move that takes advantage of Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB), and Flamethrower can be used against the many Steel-types being exploited this season.

Gastrodon

NIANTIC

• Fast Move: Mud-Slap
• Charged Moves: Body Slam and Water Pulse
• Type: Ground/Water
• Resistances: Steel, Rock, Poison, Fire, and Electric
• Weaknesses: Grass

Gastrodon didn’t use to be good at the Go Battle League, but thanks to the Mud-Slap buff and its very high Stamina, things changed for the dual Water/Ground-type creature. Plus, having only one weakness makes the water slug an even better choice.

Out of both Fast Moves, Mud-Slap is stronger, cheaper, and benefits from STAB. Body Slam is Gastrodon’s cheapest Charged Move, and due to how fast it is, it can be used to force the enemy shields while Water Pulse expands the coverage.

Azumarill (XL)

• Fast Move: Bubble
• Charged Moves: Play Rough and Ice Beam
• Type: Water/Fairy
• Resistances: Bug, Fighting, Water, Ice, Fire, Dark, and Dragon
• Weaknesses: Electric, Grass, and Poison

Azumarill is, without a doubt, one of the best Fairy-type Pokemon ever. This is mainly due to its solid moveset, great coverage, and massive bulk that allows it to outlast most other opponents.

Bubble is the best Fast Move to use, with a good balance between damage and energy generation. Play Rough is the Charged Move you need, as it’s cheap and powerful. Plus, it benefits from STAB and will target Dark and Poison-type opponents. For some extra coverage, use Ice Beam.
