DEXERTOPokemon Go players can sometimes use Mega Evolutions in the Battle League, so here are our top recommendations to help you build the strongest team for the Master League: Mega Edition.
Mega Evolutions are not allowed in the Pokemon Go’s Battle League, no matter the level. However, Niantic’s game occasionally holds events that temporarily allow these powerful Pokemon to enter the Master League.
As you can only have one Mega-Evolved Pokemon at a time, it’s even more important than usual to know which ones are worth using should a rare event ever occur. So, without further ado, here are the best Megas for the Master League: Mega Edition.
Best team for the Pokemon Go Master League: Mega Edition
One of the best teams you can use in Pokemon Go’s Master League: Mega Edition is Mega Gyarados, Primal Groudon, and Mega Rayquaza. These are some of the strongest creatures in the meta, and together will provide wide coverage against most opposing types.
Pokemon | Fast Move | Charged Moves | Type | Resistances | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Mega Gyarados ![]() | Dragon Breath | Aqua Tail & Crunch | Water Dark | Psychic, Dark, Fire, Ghost, Ice, Steel, and Water | Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass |
Primal Groudon ![]() | Dragon Tail | Precipice Blades & Fire Punch | Fire Ground | Electric, Bug, Fairy, Fire, Poison, and Steel | Water and Ground |
Mega Rayquaza ![]() | Dragon Tail | Breaking Swipe & Dragon Ascent | Dragon Flying | Grass, Ground, Bug, Fighting, Fire, and Water | Ice, Dragon, Fairy, and Rock |
An alternate team players could try out includes Primal Groudon or Mega Garchomp, with Dialga Origin Forme, and Shadow Lugia.
The ideal partners are usually taken from the Master League ranking, but you can also check out our best Great and Ultra League guides for more inspiration and suggestions.
Having said that, these require XL Candy to reach their full potential, so this can be quite an expensive league to participate in.
Best Master League: Mega Edition Pokemon
Mega Gardevoir (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Charm
- Charged Moves: Triple Axel and Shadow Ball
- Type: Psychic/Fairy
- Resistances: Fighting, Dragon, and Psychic
- Weaknesses: Ghost, Poison, and Steel
Mega Gardevoir is one of the most used Pokemon in the game, as it is a top counter for most PvE battles, such as Giovanni and Cliff, thanks to its incredibly versatile move pool.
While its signature attack is Dazzling Gleam, here the optimal moveset combines three different types to give Mega Gardevoir a wider coverage.
Related
Charm can deal heavy damage, while Triple Axel helps boost its Attack stat by 25%, making the nuke Shadow Ball an unstoppable move.
Mega Swampert (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Mud Shot
- Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon and Earthquake
- Type: Water/Ground
- Resistances: Steel, Rock, Poison, Fire, and Electric
- Weaknesses: Grass
Mega Swampert has one of the best type combinations in the game, as its secondary type – Ground – makes it resistant to what would otherwise be a Water-type key weakness: Electric-type moves.
Besides that, this mighty beast has a very high Attack stat and a mighty move pool that can be mixed up for different coverage strategies. However, the ultimate best includes Mud Shot as the Fast Move due to its fast energy gain, which allows you to unlock Hydro Cannon early on.
With Hydro Cannon, the trainer can bait the opposing shields to then blast the outstanding nuke Earthquake to end the battle.
Crowned Sword Zacian (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Metal Claw
- Charged Moves: Close Combat and Behemoth Blade
- Type: Fairy/Steel
- Resistances: Dragon, Bug, Rock, Psychic, Poison, Normal, Ice, Grass, Flying, Fairy, and Dark
- Weaknesses: Fire and Ground
Zacian’s Crowned Sword form is considered almost unstoppable due to having the highest CP in the game, plenty of resistances, an outstanding Attack stat, and a potent move pool.
As a Fast Move, Metal Claw is just average, but it has good energy generation and benefits from STAB. This will allow players to reach the signature move Behemoth Blade, which is cheap and ridiculously strong.
Those who can afford a secondary Charged Move can add Close Combat to expand the coverage and deal even faster, high damage.
Florges (XL)
NIANTIC/THE POKEMON COMPANY- Fast Move: Fairy Wind
- Charged Moves: Moonblast and Trailblaze
- Type: Fairy
- Resistances: Dragon, Bug, Dark, and Fighting
- Weaknesses: Poison and Steel
With so many Dragon types present, Florges is a secure choice to stand strong against all of them. Palkia, Salamence, and Kyurem are all prime targets. Additionally, strong picks like Groudon and Gyarados will also struggle against it.
This Pokemon is not only bulky, but it has only two weaknesses, making it a prime choice for any team.
For the Fast Move, go with Fairy Wind, as it has fast charge and deals pretty good damage despite being a little expensive. For the Charged Move, pick Trailbraze to boost your Attack stat 25% and then – if you can afford a secondary Charged Move – use Moonblast to finish off your opponent. Plus, it will decrease your target’s Attack by 20%, too.
Lugia (Shadow XL)
The Pokemon Company / Niantic- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Moves: Aeroblast and Fly
- Type: Psychic/Flying
- Resistances: Fighting, Ground, Grass, and Psychic
- Weaknesses: Dark, Electric, Ghost, Ice, and Rock
Lugia has incredible bulk and access to some brilliant moves, making it a standout in the Battle League, mostly since the addition of the exclusive move Aeroblast.
Even though Extrasensory benefits from STAB, Dragon Tail is a better choice for Lugia’s Fast Move. For the Charges Moves, use Fly (very cheap and powerful) and combine it with Aeroblast – which deals a shocking amount of damage and has a chance to give a big buff to its Attack stat.
Mega Metagross (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Move: Meteor Mash and Earthquake
- Type: Steel/Psychic
- Resistances: Poison, Psychic, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Normal, Rock, and Steel
- Weaknesses: Dark, Fire, Ghost, and Ground
This Steel/Psychic-type creature has great stats and a whopping 10 type resistances, which will help it stay alive for a very long time during a battle. While it is mostly used as a defender, Mega Metagross can also be useful as an attacker thanks to its well-rounded stats and strong move pool.
Out of all the Fast Moves, Shadow Claw offers both solid damage and great energy gain, so go with it. As for the Charged Moves, Meteor Mash is not only cheap but incredibly powerful.
To expand the coverage even further, you can go with Earthquake as your secondary Charged Move. It is an outstanding nuke that can take care of Steel and Fire types.
Dialga Origin Forme (XL)

- Fast Move: Dragon Breath
- Charged Moves: Roar of Time and Iron Head
- Type: Steel/Dragon
- Resistances: Poison, Grass, Bug, Electric, Flying, Normal, Psychic, Rock, Steel, and Water
- Weaknesses: Fighting and Ground
Dialga has long been considered one of the biggest threats in the Battle League, and its Origin Forme is even more powerful. Additionally, it also has the incredible advantage of being a Dragon-type that’s not weak to Fairy-type attacks or Dragon-type attacks.
Dragon Breath is Dialga’s optimal Fast Move, so make sure you have it. As for Charged Moves, its special move, Roar of Time, is the one to use, as it is an incredible nuke that can take down any opponent while also spamming Iron Head.
Palkia Origin Forme (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Breath
- Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Spacial Rend
- Type: Water/Dragon
- Resistances: Steel, Fire, and Water
- Weaknesses: Dragon and Fairy
Palkia Origin Forme sits at the top of our regular Master League ranking and is undoubtedly a champion in Pokemon Go. With incredible Defense and HP and an outstanding Attack stat, this creature is a charger that works perfectly for leading or closing a battle, thanks to its powerful moveset.
Dragon Breath is stronger than Dragon Tail, so go with it as a Fast Move. For Charged Moves, similar to Dialga Origin Forme, its new move Spacial Rend is the ultimate attack to use, while also using Aqua Tail to spam.
Primal Kyogre (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Waterfall
- Charged Move: Surf and Thunder
- Type: Water
- Resistances: Water, Steel, Ice, and Fire
- Weaknesses: Electric and Grass
As expected, the Legendary creature Kyogre and its Primal forme remain as one of the best attackers in Pokemon Go, with a huge 353-attack stat and the versatility to perform well in loads of different scenarios.
Using a combination of Waterfall and Surf, it’s a powerhouse, especially if you add Thunder as a secondary Charged Move, which is usually its biggest weakness. With a CP that now reaches 6,672, Primal Kyogre is an unstoppable machine, even more so if you push it to level 50 or boost it in Rainy weather.
Mega Garchomp (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Moves: Breaking Swipe and Earth Power
- Type: Dragon/Ground
- Resistances: Electric, Rock, Poison, and Fire
- Weaknesses: Ice, Dragon, and Fairy
Even though the best Ground and best Dragon-type positions are reserved for Primal Groudon and Mega Rayquaza, respectively, Mega Garchomp is still a strong contestant for both. Plus, its whole moveset benefits from STAB.
Dragon Tail is one of the best Dragon-type Fast Moves available, as it is very well-rounded. For the Charged Moves, use one of each of Garchomp’s types. Earth Power can be used to decrease the target’s Defense stat by 20%, while Breaking Swipe does the same but with the Attack stat.
Mega Latios (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Breath
- Charged Moves: Aura Sphere and Luster Purge
- Type: Dragon/Psychic
- Resistances: Electric, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Psychic, and Water
- Weaknesses: Bug, Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, and Ice
Mega Latios is another Dragon-type, which is optimal for the Master League: Mega Edition. And even though it falls slightly behind without immunity to fellow Dragon-type moves, it’s still a wonderful choice when properly accompanied.
Dragon Breath is almost essential as a Fast Move – plus it benefits from STAB. Pair that with Aura Sphere as a Charged Move to expand its coverage and bait shields. Then you can finish off your opponent with a debuff nuke like Luster Purge.
Players can also go with Mega Latias. The only difference is that instead of Luster Purge, they’ll use Mist Ball as their secondary Charged Move.
Mega Salamence (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Moves: Fly and Brutal Swing
- Type: Dragon/Flying
- Resistances: Ground, Grass, Water, Fire, Fighting, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Ice, Dragon, Fairy, and Rock
Besides being one of the strongest attackers on the list, Mega Salamence is also a bulky Pokemon that can stand its ground for a long time, making it an ideal choice for a Mega Edition team.
Dragon Tail is its strongest Fast Move, plus it’s the only one that benefits from STAB. With Fly as the Charged Move, you can expand your coverage with Brutal Swing, which can also be used to bait shields.
Mega Rayquaza (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Moves: Breaking Swipe and Dragon Ascent
- Type: Dragon/Flying
- Resistances: Ground, Grass, Water, Fire, Fighting, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Ice, Dragon, Fairy, and Rock
As far as Dragons go, you won’t get much better than Mega Rayquaza in Pokemon Go. Dragon-type moves are rarely resisted, making it a great all-around attacker with Dragon Tail and Breaking Swipe.
While for now it’s best to exploit its Dragon-type potential, it can also be utilized as a great Flying-type attacker, where powerful moves like Air Slash give it a big advantage once combined with its Legacy move Dragon Ascent.
Primal Groudon (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Tail
- Charged Move: Precipice Blades and Fire Punch
- Type: Fire/Ground
- Resistances: Electric, Steel, Poison, Fire, Fairy, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Water and Ground
With an outstanding Attack stat of 353, Primal Groudon is – and apparently will forever be – the ultimate Ground-type Pokemon in the game.
This massive beast has a huge max CP of 6,672 that can be boosted by raising it to level 50 or by taking advantage of Sunny weather. More so, its signature move, Precipice Blades, has a damage of 120, and combined with Dragon Tail for more coverage, they are endgame. Just be careful of Water-type enemies.
Mega Gyarados (XL)
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Dragon Breath
- Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Crunch
- Type: Water/Dark
- Resistances: Dark, Fire, Ghost, Ice, Psychic, Steel, and Water
- Weaknesses: Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass
Mega Gyarados is, without a doubt, a top choice in the Master League when Megas are allowed to enter. It has a devastatingly high max 5332 CP and access to Dragon-type attacks without being weak to Dragons – which is a huge advantage.
Make sure you have Dragon Breath, as it’s one of the best Fast Moves in Pokemon Go. For Charged Moves, go with the low-cost Aqua Tail to bait shields and Crunch for solid Dark-type STAB damage and a chance of decreasing your opponent’s Defense.
The Master League: Mega Edition meta will no doubt involve several Mega Gyarados, so whatever Mega you choose to take into battle, make sure you have something on your team that can counter this Dark/Water-type beast – if you’re not using it, of course.
