MTG’s Monster Hunter collab delayed as Wizards admit it “fell short of expectations”

Magic: The Gathering is pulling its Monster Hunter Secret Lair after a wave of community feedback, with Wizards of the Coast confirming the entire drop will be rebuilt and delayed into 2026.

The collaboration was first revealed on November 18, 2025, but frustration spread quickly across both MTG and Monster Hunter communities. Fans called out the choice of monsters, the absence of the series’ trademark equipment loop, and found a spelling error on Kokoto, one of the game’s most iconic villages.

Players were also confused by design decisions that didn’t reflect the games, such as Gore Magala being treated as a demon and Brachydios functioning as a spellslinger. Well, Wizards of the Coast has now addressed the criticism, promising changes to better reflect Capcom’s beast-slaying series.

Monster Hunter x Secret Lair is being reworked

Wizards publicly addressed the criticism on November 26, posting a statement on the official MTG website.

“Let’s cut to the chase: the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop we revealed last week fell short of expectations. We heard loud and clear that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better,” the team wrote.

They added that they “missed the mark on elements like card selection and faithfully integrating the world and mechanics of Monster Hunter,” noting that the drop “is not up to the standard you have come to expect.”

The studio confirmed that Capcom is backing the decision to pull the release, saying the publisher is “on board for us to take another swing at this Superdrop as well.” Wizards will now rebuild the collaboration from scratch, with new details and an updated release date expected sometime in 2026.
