Riot GamesRiot Games has confirmed plans for a League of Legends shakeup in 2027, including a new client and a visual overhaul for Summoner’s Rift.
It’s hard to fathom that LoL has been with us for 16 years. Riot’s MOBA has been an unstoppable force for the better part of two decades, continuing to be one of the most-played video games in the world month after month.
However, for those growing tired of the same experience all these years on, Riot has some changes in store to keep you hooked. These changes are so significant that Bloomberg reported LoL has a new internal codename, ‘League Next,’ to represent the overhaul planned for 2027.
Minutes after Bloomberg reported on a “refreshed” version of the F2P game being worked on in secret, Riot came out and confirmed the news, revealing what players can expect in the near future.
Riot details LoL revamp set for 2027
A brief video update was pushed live on December 18, 2025, ahead of Riot’s initial plan. As Head of League Studio, Andrew van Roon, said on X (formerly Twitter), this video was intended to go out in January as part of a “Season Start moment.”
However, due to some “early speculation making the rounds, we felt we should share it earlier.”
The video features two LoL developers as they run through a number of changes and new additions in the pipeline. Chief among them is a “brand new around-game client that’s fully integrated with the in-game experience.” This means that, upon its arrival, there would no longer be a separate application.
Moreover, devs confirmed plans for a “full visual overhaul of Summoner’s Rift,” LoL’s original and most iconic map. There’s no telling what the new version may look like, but we know there will also be some “gameplay changes tied to the visual update,” as well.

Beyond that, the onboarding experience is also set to be refined, though in what capacity is yet unclear. Lastly, Runes and “pre-game systems” are also being targeted with key changes to smooth out your time in the lobby.
All of this is intended to “lay the groundwork for League’s next era.” We’re set to learn more throughout 2026, ahead of the planned update launch in 2027.
