Valve confirms Steam Machine will be priced like a PC but will make it a “good deal”
ValveValve says Steam Machine will be priced “like a PC” as it targets a “good deal” for buyers as fans continue to speculate how much it will cost.
On November 12, Valve revealed three new pieces of hardware: Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and a new revamped Steam Controller. The products are set to release in 2026, but prices haven’t been revealed just yet.
YouTubers like Linus Tech Tips have shared their thoughts and concerns about the Steam Machine’s price, but Valve has confirmed that it will not follow traditional console pricing and will instead be positioned in line with equivalent PC hardware.
Valve has given more details on how the desktop PC will be priced, revealing that they won’t sell the Steam Machine at a loss in order to drive in more customers.
Valve targets PC-level pricing
Speaking on the Friends Per Second podcast, Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais reiterated that position and said the company wants the system to be a “good deal” relative to comparable PCs.
Griffais explained that internal pricing is still in flux due to market conditions. He said the goal is to align pricing with what a user would pay if they built a PC with similar performance. “Ideally, we’d be pretty competitive with that and have a pretty good deal,” he said, noting that fluctuating component costs make it difficult to lock in a number.

Asked whether Valve would subsidize Steam Machine to hit lower console-style price points, Griffais said it would not. “No, it’s more in line with what you might expect from the current PC market,” he said.
He added that features like the small form factor and the system’s low noise output offer value that is difficult to replicate in a DIY build.
PlayStation and Xbox consoles typically launch with subsidized pricing, though both companies have raised prices in 2025. PS5 models currently retail between 500 and 550 dollars, with PS5 Pro priced at 750 dollars. Xbox Series X starts from 600 dollars.
