Arcanaut StudiosStar Wars: Fate of the Old Republic has been officially revealed, serving as the spiritual successor to one of the most beloved RPGs of all time.
On a night where Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 scooped Game of the Year, The Game Awards 2025 was also stacked with major announcements. From a new Divinity game by Larian Studios to a long-awaited Control follow-up, fans got an in-depth look at what they’ll be playing in years to come.
But arguably the biggest surprise of them all came from a galaxy far, far away, as Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was shown off for the first time. Here’s everything we know about it so far.

Is there a Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic release date?
No, there is currently no concrete release date for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, or even a release window. In an interview with the devs on the official Star Wars website, it was revealed that the game is “still in the early stages of development and creation,” which is understandable since the studio making it was only founded in July 2025.
Developer
FOTOR is being developed by Arcanaut Studios, with Casey Hudson serving as Game Director. You might know Hudson from his work with BioWare, where he was Project Director on the original Mass Effect trilogy, as well as, crucially, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Platforms
The game will arrive on both PC and consoles, although the team hasn’t mentioned any specific platforms like PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Given that it’s many years away, a release on PlayStation 6 and the next generation of Xbox hardware is more likely.

Gameplay & story
Arcanaut StudiosJust like the original, Fate of the Old Republic is a “choice-driven” RPG, where you play as a Force user and “every decision deepens their journey toward light or darkness.” It isn’t confirmed exactly when in the Star Wars timeline it will take place, given that the Old Republic era spans a huge amount of time, but it will be thousands of years before the events of A New Hope.
The devs have confirmed that this game is a “spiritual successor” to KOTOR but not a direct continuation, instead focusing on new characters in a brand-new story.
So, you won’t need to have played the original or its sequel to understand what’s going on in FOTOR. However, if you want to brush up on your lore, the troubled remake of Knights of the Old Republic from Saber Interactive is reportedly still in development.
