Splitgate 2 set to relaunch 5 months after being taken down

Splitgate 2 players shooting through portals

Splitgate 2 is targeting a December relaunch, five months after devs rolled back the initial release amid a stream of controversy and player count woes.

The original Splitgate was an overnight sensation that hooked tens of thousands of players with its ‘Portal meets Halo’ style FPS gameplay. It peaked with almost 70,000 concurrent players on PC alone.

Looking to double down, 1047 Games got to work on a full-fledged sequel fit with a Battle Royale component. However, it failed to replicate the original’s success. Launching on June 6, 2025 to just over 25,000 concurrent players on Steam, it quickly fizzled out, losing over 80% of its player base in the following weeks.

Paired with a mix of controversies ranging from the infamous ‘Make FPS Great Again’ hat at Summer Game Fest, to criticism of a $140 USD cosmetic bundle in the game’s store, it brought a flurry of negative attention. Just one month later, devs rolled the game back into Beta, and only now are they gearing up for the relaunch.

Splitgate 2 relaunching earlier than anticipated

On July 23, devs admitted they “launched too early” and that Splitgate 2 simply wasn’t ready. In light of reverting back to Beta, a number of staff were laid off as the remaining crew pledged to rework fundamentals like progression, map design, and monetization systems.

Now, after four months in the dark, the studio is ready to try again. Servers will be taken down on December 4 to make way for the full relaunch at an undisclosed point that same month. This is earlier than the original plan for an early 2026 revival.

Over the period of downtime, devs claim to have “rebuilt the entire foundation around what makes Splitgate special,” including adjustments to “portals, movement, and pure gunplay.”

This time around, however, they’re not setting expectations quite as high. Instead, as 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx put it, they’re hopeful to simply “put out a great game and then grow it over time. We aren’t trying to build massive hype going into relaunch.”

Proulx also joked that he “will not” be making an appearance at this year’s Game Awards.
