Sanrio’s theme park in Oita, Japan is undergoing a major renovation that developers say will transform the area into a luxurious resort packed to the brim with Hello Kitty and her friends.

Hello Kitty has remained a cultural icon ever since she was created in the mid-70s. She exploded in popularity in the late 80s and early 90s, spawning her own animated shows, oodles of merchandise, and even inspiring the construction of two different theme parks.

Sanrio fans will likely be familiar with Puroland in Tokyo, an indoor theme park dedicated to the company’s adorable cast of mascots. The brand also boasts an outdoor theme park in Oita Prefecture called ‘Harmonyland,’ which boasts family-friendly rides like a Ferris wheel, carousel, and small roller coasters.

This particular theme park is getting a significant facelift that will turn it from a funfair into a relaxing resort ‘in the sky.’

Hello Kitty park to be transformed into luxury resort

Japanese news outlets report that Harmonyland will soon go by another name: Park in the Sky, as revealed on December 8, 2025. The theme of this new escape is a resort in the clouds, making use of the theme park’s surrounding terrain in the mountains.

In addition to the pre-existing funfair, developers will install new facilities and attractions like a large canopy to weather-proof the area from rain or snow, ropeways and electric transportation to get from the tall mountains to the park below, and hotels with scenic views of the landscape.

During the announcement ceremony on December 8, developers revealed that they hope to create a place where Sanrio’s adorable characters can be combined with Oita’s luxurious hot springs and breathtaking scenery.

Thus far, there’s no scheduled opening date for this ‘Park in the Sky,’ but it’s one of several exciting upcoming theme park destinations being built in Japan.

For instance, an official Pokemon theme park, PokePark Kanto, is set to open in spring 2026, featuring a town with gift shops and rides, and even a nature walk where trainers can catch ‘mons in the wild. They’ll have to pass a fitness test to ensure they can handle the trek, which includes grassy sections, changes in elevation levels, and even tunnels.
