RedditA piece of AI-generated Christmas art has been removed from public display in London, as residents said it looked like something out of a “horror” movie.
The rise of Artificial Intelligence has impacted plenty of creatives over the last few years, especially as AI has become more adept at generating images. However, there are still plenty of telltale signs at times that something has been made using AI, especially with regard to actual people.
With the holiday season coming up, a number of big brands have embraced AI-generated content. Coca-Cola’s traditional ‘Holidays are coming’ advertisement has been made by AI again for this year, which sparked backlash from viewers.
Over in Southwark, London, two massive murals for Christmas also came under fire for looking like something out of a “horror” movie with some of the distorted faces.

The artwork was roundly mocked on social media, especially on local Facebook groups. “What in the AI is going on here and just HOW did this carnage get approved,” one critic said.
“At first glance it’s almost passable, but when you look deeper you see the AI slop horror,” another who had seen it in person said. “You know what’s Christmassy? A snowman with a fucking eye on his cheek,” commented another.
As per LondonCentric, artist Mat Collishaw was behind the murals. Collishaw has become renowned for mixing AI into his work, and has “embraced” the likes of ChatGPT.
LondonCentric’s report stated that the murals had been removed in late November, but the online mocking has continued since then.
Others have stated that the piece is a commentary on the political climate in the United Kingdom, but its the AI nature of things that has drawn the most backlash.
