Destiny 2 hits its lowest player count ever

Destiny 2 is currently in the midst of its least-popular phase in recorded history. Fewer players are jumping into the live-service game than ever.

October 2, 2025 marked a historic date for Bungie. Not the good kind, however. Its long-running live-service shooter, Destiny 2, has reached a historic low.

With a 24-hour peak concurrent player count of 16,001, it’s the weakest period the game has ever seen, at least on Steam.

Then on October 7, again the peak dropped as low as 16,067, and at one point during that 24-hour window, it even dipped as low as 2,323 concurrent players, although this coincided with Bungie’s weekly reset at 5pm UTC.

Of course, this data only tells the story on Steam and does not factor in those on console, or even those enjoying Destiny Rising, the mobile spinoff, that’s arguably been better supported in recent months than its AAA counterpart.

The new low of 16,000 concurrents in a 24-hour period follows close behind the previous record, which came during the slowest point of the Revenant episode earlier this year.

Interest has waned in general since The Light and Darkness saga concluded with The Final Shape in early 2024. The first expansion of the new era, Edge of Fate, failed to capture the same attention. It launched to a peak of 98,211 players on Steam, falling far behind The Final Shape’s launch day high of 314,634 players.

Bungie has been consistently changing the live-service experience in recent months to address the fading playerbase, but evidently, to no avail. The recent introduction of the Portal system, a new navigational tool replacing the Director, is one such change that hasn’t gone down well, further complicating matters and driving players away.

The next big moment for Bungie comes on December 2, 2025, with the release of the next Destiny 2 expansion. Renegades is set to prominently feature Star Wars iconography, drop players into similarly themed locations, and tell a story modelled after the iconic films. We’ll just have to wait and see if Guardian’s wielding Lightsabers will be enough to stem the bleeding.
