Black Ops 7 is being hit with hundreds of negative user reviews across a range of platforms, leaving the player score in freefall as some label it the “worst CoD of all time.”

Like clockwork, a new year brings a new Call of Duty, and November 14 marked the launch of this year’s iteration, Black Ops 7. Despite saying many of the right things in the lead-up, however, launch hasn’t exactly gone according to plan.

Release window player count, at least judging by Steam, is a far cry from peaks seen in prior years. Meanwhile, those jumping in have not been quiet in their criticisms of certain components, including a largely lambasted campaign.

Reception is now at a point Black Ops 7 has made history, only in the wrong direction. The game’s user score on Metacritic now places it at the bottom of the list as the lowest-scoring Call of Duty game in the franchise.

Black Ops 7 now has worst user review score of any CoD

At the time of writing, Black Ops 7 has fallen to a Metacritic user review score of a paltry 1.8. This stems from 661 user reviews on the site, with 570 of them listed as negative.

Of course, a bulk of them are just flat 0’s, so do take the criticism with a grain of salt. For comparison, Black Ops 7 currently sits at a ‘Mixed’ rating on Steam with 1,251 reviews from PC players with verified game time.

Nonetheless, the low Metacritic user score now makes Black Ops 7 the weakest CoD on the platform, trumping the previous low of 2.3 for Modern Warfare 3 (2023).

Diving into the reviews themselves, many have been quick to bash this year’s new release as a “total waste of time and money,” with some going as far as to claim 2025 is “the year Activision killed Call of Duty once and for all.”

“Has to be the worst CoD of all time,” one review reads. “I want my money back.”

Some avoided the monetary issue, making clear they’re grateful it was available on Game Pass as to not “waste money.”

“Game Pass has paid for itself by letting me discover it’s an absolute stinker without buying it,” one player said.

In our own review, we described Black Ops 7 as an “underdog” entering the market this year, with strong competition in the form of not only Battlefield 6, but the likes of Arc Raiders too.

We’ll have to wait and see how the user score settles in the coming weeks as more players leave their impressions after time with this year’s CoD.
